It contains a natural harbor which has been invaded many times, Including by the Dutch, Portuguese and finally the British.  The remnants of these three nations can be found in Colombo today in some of its colonial buildings, customs, and food, and walk through Pettah or Fort or even afternoon tea at Galle Face Hotel will take you right back in time.

The political capital is Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, which houses the Parliament.  Another main city is Mount Lavinia also features many restaurants and pubs along the coast line. Another city of interest is Moratuwa, which is home to the famous Bolgoda Lake, where one can find many water sporting activities and the historic Yacht Club.

Although Colombo does not have any metro or subway systems, travelling, is very easy.  A must-try experience is travelling by tuk-tuk. Public transport such as buses and trains are also available, in addition to cabs.

Any visitor will find Colombo tourist-friendly, with plenty of choices for a accommodation, banking services, restaurants, money exchangers, medical facilities, nightlife, and transport facilities.  Most people in Colombo speak and understand English, so communicating is easier in Colombo than in other districts.
